Yesterday however, it was my turn to get back in the boat and join the alumni crew “Oars of Phwoar” back on the River Camb for Pembroke Regatta.
Having named ourselves after the award given by the club to the most attractive male rower spotted on the river during MECBC outings (or, in the absence of a sufficiently attractive male rower, an entire crew or a member of the rapidly expanding MECBC “entourage”) we prepared ourselves for two kilometres of torture and rowed up to the start line.
For our first race, we lined up against a Pembroke College crew.
Frustratingly, we lost by a canvas, with some of us (mainly me), desperately attempting to remember how to row over the one kilometre course (and admittedly catching a crab in the process).
Fortunately, our second race was more successful and after fuelling up on a frankly astonishing amount of Haribos, we beat a second Pembroke crew by just over a canvas.
